English Hour Ends the Semester with Food and Community

On Wednesday, 11 October, HUSO students gathered at English Corner for their last “English Hour” of the semester. The faculty-wide English initiative aims to create opportunities for all HUSO students to use and develop their English skills.

During the first semester of the 2023 academic year, English Hour was held twice weekly, and students majoring in English, Thai, German, Chinese, and Information Sciences joined in to put their English to use. The gatherings provided fruitful opportunity for students to meet and exchange across different departments as well as years, with a good mix of first-, second-, third-, fourth-year, and post-graduate students forming friendships and mentorships thanks to their encounters at English Corner. While some students joined English Hour due to a pure passion for English, others have felt it to be a safe space to immerse themselves in the language, aiming to face their fears of speaking English before starting internships in Bangkok or other contexts requiring English language skills.

The final English Hour was held in true American-style potluck fashion. Students and teachers mingled late into the evening over homecooked dishes and snacks contributed by everyone in the group. Next year, Ms. Vanessa Moll, the organizer of English Hour, says she will continue to hold the activity every Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm. She looks forward to seeing both old and new faces in HUSO’s little English Corner of Building 3.
