IRDTP, KKU, promotes Computational Thinking to improve instruction – from teachers to students

Tuesday December 13, 2022 – The Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, Khon Kaen University, the Mathematics Education Research Center, and the Education Foundation for Development of Thinking Skills, held a special lecture and workshop on: “Programming Activity to Develop Mathematical Thinking at Kindergarten and Primary school levels“ onsite at the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, Khon Kaen University and also online.

Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Academic Service and Acting Director of IRDTP delivered the opening address and welcomed the participants to the workshop.

“This is a good chance to update that the world needs to develop programming thinking through programming activities and introduce this to schools. It’s not going to be what former instruction was carried out, but how to incorporate Mathematical Thinking by programming activities in different subjects. The issue is truly challenging,” said Assoc. Prof. Maitree.

The next part was a special lecture by Prof. Masami Isoda, Ph.D., from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, on APEC and SEAMEO frameworks for designing programming activities in classrooms WITHOUT teaching programming language. Attendants were educators, teachers, students and interested individuals, who also had a chance to exchange ideas about the development of advanced thinking skills in Mathematics, especially Computational Thinking. Participants then attended the workshop in two parts so that they could adjust the content in their instruction activities at their schools.

The first session was the workshop on problem posing in mathematics classroom for learning visible programming language

The second session was on challenge Robot Programming and how to make clear mathematical thinking

Participants included the school director and teachers from Santithammawittaya School, Udon Thani, lecturers, students, practicing teachers, totaling 17 people through online training, and 54 people who attended the sessions onsite at the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, Khon Kaen University.

The workshop encouraged educators, lecturers, practicing teachers and interested people to exchange their ideas about the advanced Mathematics thinking skill, especially in Computational Thinking. They also had a chance to train themselves so that they could apply in their instruction. Moreover, the participants were acknowledged about the changing world’s educational direction so that they could bring to apply at their school.
