From Seed to Harvest: 700 Kindergarteners Embrace Thai Agricultural Traditions at KKU

In a heartwarming initiative to connect young minds with the roots of Thai culture, the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Education at Khon Kaen University recently hosted an engaging rice harvesting event. This initiative, part of the “Creative Rice Planting: Shaping the Dreams of New Generation Farmers” project, aims to instill agricultural knowledge and appreciation in over 700 kindergarten students from the Demonstration School of Khon Kaen University.
Held on November 19, 2024, at the university’s agricultural training plots, the event was graced by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Issara Kanjug, Dean of the Faculty of Education

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khundej Suriharn, Deputy Dean for Administration, Faculty of Agriculture, who presided over the opening ceremony. Their presence underscored the importance of integrating practical agricultural experiences into early education.

The young participants had the opportunity to harvest Mor Khor 60-1, a rice variety developed by Khon Kaen University. This variety, known for its short harvesting period and resistance to diseases, was introduced by Asist. Prof. Dr. Jirawat Sanitchon, a prominent lecturer and rice breeder at the university. The activity not only highlighted the scientific advancements in agriculture but also celebrated the cultural significance of rice in Thai society.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Issara Kanjug emphasized the importance of life skills in education, noting that this hands-on experience allows children to understand the journey of rice from field to table. Following their participation in rice planting on Mother’s Day, the children now witnessed the fruits of their labor during the harvest on Father’s Day, fostering a deeper connection to their heritage.

The event was a collaborative effort, with support from the 23rd Military Circle, Sri Patcharin Camp, Khon Kaen, ensuring safe transportation, and the Security and Safety Division of Khon Kaen University managing traffic. Senior students from the Faculty of Agriculture provided guidance during the harvesting process, alongside teachers and parents, creating a nurturing environment for learning and family bonding.

This initiative not only enriches the children’s educational experience but also strengthens family ties, as parents and children engage in meaningful activities together. The Faculty of Education continues to champion such out-of-classroom learning experiences, recognizing their vital role in holistic education.
