Tawanchai Foundation joins 25 nations to hold an Asian Pacific Congress

Tawachai Foundation joined 25 nations worldwide to hold the Asian Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Congress 

     November 11-12, 2019 at Pullman Raja Orchid Hotel, Khon Kaen – The Research Center for Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Deformities under the Royal Patronage Tawanchai Foundation cooperating with Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and the Association for Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Deformities held the 12th (The 9th Asian Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Congress 2019 (APCC 2019) “Regional & Global Partnership of Comprehensive Care in Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Deformities” and the 12th Annual Meeting of THAICLEFT Association in order to exchange knowledge, experiences and innovation of cleft lip and palate complete patient care and to strengthen the network of cleft lip and palate complete patient care in Thailand and Asia Pacific. Dr. Somsak Jangtrakoon, Khon Kaen Governor presided over the opening ceremony; Prof. Bowornsilp Chowchuen, M.D., Director of Tawanchai Center and Chairperson of the event with Assoc. Prof. Non Rotevachiranon, M.D., President of Thailand Cleft Lip-Palate Association conveyed the reporting speech while Dr. David Gillett, a representative from Asian Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Association (APCC) gave the association’s background.      

     The Asian Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Congress 2019 is the 9th time after the founding of Asian Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Association. The first congress was held in Singapore in 1988, and the following 7 yearly congresses were held in New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, and Malaysia. This year can be considered the success of Khon Kaen to be selected unanimously as the host of the 9th congress, in which over 70 experts from Thailand and many other countries participated. Other 479 participants this year came from 25 countries, namely, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Jordan, Australia, United Kingdom, Belgium, Norway, USA, Canada, and Mexico. The congress this year was supported by Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Smile Train Organization, Transforming Faces Organization, and the consultant teams and organizing committee.  

     Cleft lip, cleft palate and craniofacial deformities are an important problem of the Northeast, Thailand and the Me Kong Region. This congress is a connecting point for the network that is responsible for the care of the patients in operation, rehabilitation, and complete care among countries in Europe, America, and Asia Pacific. The outcome can be applied for the care of patients in other groups. This congress was successful with compliments from participants that Tawanchai Center operational system in taking care of cleft lip and palate patients is very efficient and is a good model for the world. Academically, there have been exchanges of multi-professionals that deal with the causes, prevention, treatment, care, and rehabilitation. Innovations have been created in various relevant aspects. In addition, the collaboration has been both at the national, international, and regional levels. This led to the upgrading and creating of the effective patient and family-centered care model. In this respect, the potential and reputation of Khon Kaen have been promoted at an international level.
