KKU Architecture Partners with CEA for Isan Creative Festival 2026 to Elevate Regional Creative Economy
The Faculty of Architecture at Khon Kaen University drives regional development through creative innovation and academic collaborations at the upcoming festival.

On 12 June 2026, at the Treasury Museum in Khon Kaen Province, the Faculty of Architecture at Khon Kaen University officially announced its collaboration as the primary academic partner for the Isan Creative Festival 2026. Organised by the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) Northeast under the theme “NORTHEAST MODERN: Ready | Adaptable | Friendly,” the festival is scheduled to take place from 11 to 19 July 2026 in Khon Kaen. This partnership marks a significant proactive step by the Faculty of Architecture in tangibly developing the creative economy of the Northeast region.

Associate Professor Kitapatr Thapalabutr, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Khon Kaen University, stated that the university does not view itself merely as an institution granting degrees, but as a long-term partner in regional development. He emphasised that the faculty works collaboratively with a network of universities across the Northeast, including institutions in Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchasima, Maha Sarakham, and Surin, to elevate regional standards of creativity and innovation. This is achieved through mechanisms such as joint research networks, cross-university curricula, joint laboratories, and projects connecting students with local creative businesses. These collaborations generate new knowledge and encourage students to apply creative concepts to business and social sectors, with the vision that graduates from this Northeast university network will become tomorrow’s CEOs, founders, and curators driving the regional economy.

A key highlight spearheaded by the Faculty of Architecture in this collaborative effort is the Isan Creativity and Innovation Summit 2026 (ICIS 2026). This regional academic symposium is held under the theme “ICIS-Modern: Serving Innovation Experiences, Adapting, Recovering, and Enhancing Growth Opportunities, Connecting Thai-International Friendships.” The summit serves as a platform bringing together designers, innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and creators from the Northeast, across Thailand, and the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) to drive the creative economy through design thinking and innovation. A key goal of the summit is to present academic evidence demonstrating that Northeast Thailand possesses a strong base of knowledge and highly capable human capital.

The ICIS 2026 summit is scheduled for Sunday, 12 July 2026, from 08:30 to 17:00 hrs at the College of Local Administration, Khon Kaen University. Organised by the Faculty of Architecture in collaboration with network partners, the event reflects the readiness of the Northeast to integrate cultural capital, creativity, technology, and business networks. This partnership underscores the crucial role of academic institutions in stepping beyond the classroom to serve as key engines in building a robust and sustainable creative economy ecosystem in the region.
