On June 9, 2025, Khon Kaen University, through its Division of Enterprise and Social Sustainability, led by Ms. Waraporn Phiwphann-ngam, Deputy Director of the Center for Enterprise and Social Sustainability Promotion, along with Associate Professor Dr. Phetcharat Thammabenjapol, a plant pathology expert from the Faculty of Agriculture, visited the asparagus farming community in Moo 8, Wang Sawap Subdistrict, Phu Pha Man District, Khon Kaen Province. The visit aimed to explore sustainable agricultural development approaches and follow up on the use of biocontrol agents in managing plant fungal diseases. The team also gathered feedback and listened to challenges faced by local farmers.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between Khon Kaen University, the Khon Kaen Provincial Agricultural Office, and the Phu Pha Man District Agricultural Office. Key figures in the partnership include Ms. Areerat Boonruang and Acting Sub-Lieutenant Yupharat Phanomphrom, senior agricultural extension officers, and Ms. Lakkhana Mueangwaeng, the District Agriculture Officer, who were joined by relevant staff.
During the field visit, Ms. Piyamas Saensun, head of the local asparagus grower group, along with more than 30 farmers, presented the current challenges in combating fungal diseases—highlighting persistent issues such as declining yields and stagnant market prices. In response, Dr. Phetcharat provided technical guidance on the proper application of biocontrol sprays, effective disposal methods for infected stems to prevent disease spread, and the process of collecting infected samples for laboratory analysis to develop effective plant disease prevention strategies.
Khon Kaen University continues to transfer academic knowledge to local communities and farmer groups to support stable career development. This project marks another significant step toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving local quality of life and strengthening grassroots economic sustainability.
