The Student Union of Khon Kaen University (KKU) hosted the annual “Chao Pho Mor Din Daeng Worship Ceremony for New Students, Academic Year 2025” under the ceremonial theme “Haeh Hom Satsada Thawai Sakkara Chao Pho Mor Din Daeng.” The event is designed to strengthen faith, preserve cultural identity, and cultivate the spirit of being part of the Mor Din Daeng community among first-year students.
The opening ceremony was presided over by KKU President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul and attended by university executives, faculty members, staff, and over 7,000 incoming students. The event began with a ceremonial procession starting from the old Physical Education Building and proceeding to the 40th Anniversary Dhammasathan Pavilion—home to the shrine of Chao Pho Mor Din Daeng. The ritual is a significant expression of reverence toward one of the university’s most sacred spiritual sites.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul emphasized the importance of the ceremony, stating, “Chao Pho Mor Din Daeng has long been a spiritual anchor for the KKU community. This tradition forms a vital part of our cultural foundation, uniting everyone who shares this land of Mor Din Daeng. Today’s ceremony marks not just the beginning of academic life, but also the start of a heartfelt connection with the university through a deeply meaningful rite.”
He also offered his blessings to the new students, wishing them success and happiness throughout their academic journey at KKU.
Mr. Sorawit Tangpakdee, a fourth-year engineering student and current President of the KKU Student Union, explained that the Student Union recognizes the significance of instilling university identity and reverence for sacred spaces. Thus, it organized this year’s ceremony as part of the welcoming activities for new students under the symbolic title “Haeh Hom Satsada Thawai Sakkara Chao Pho Mor Din Daeng.”
The event was held with three interrelated goals: first, to offer blessings and spiritual encouragement to first-year students as they begin university life by paying homage to Chao Pho Mor Din Daeng, the sacred guardian of KKU; second, to preserve local traditions and cultural practices rooted in Northeastern beliefs; and third, to reflect the unique identity of KKU through a vibrant and meaningful cultural event created by and for the new generation of students.
Ultimately, this annual event is a powerful affirmation of Khon Kaen University’s values—nurturing faith, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering a deep sense of belonging among its students. It aligns with the university’s vision of strengthening institutional identity, sustaining cultural continuity, and honoring sacred traditions within the academic setting, while also supporting long-term community resilience and social sustainability.
