Bangkok, 21 July 2025 – The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), in collaboration with Khon Kaen University (KKU) through the National Phenome Institute (NPI) and a consortium of leading national institutions and industrial sectors, officially launched the “Hub of Talents in Microbiome Medicine and Microbial Technology for One Health (MMOH)” at Kamolmart Room, The Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok. Backed by a grant of THB 2 million for fiscal year 2025, MMOH is established as a national high-caliber talent centre dedicated to fostering advanced expertise in medical microbiome science and microbial biotechnology, with a long-term vision to drive precision medicine, preventive healthcare, and One Health innovation in Thailand.
Background and Rationale
Thailand currently faces growing public health challenges such as chronic diseases, antibiotic resistance, and weakened immunity. In response, microbiome science has emerged as a transformative field in modern medicine, offering insights into individual variation and enabling personalized health strategies. MMOH serves as a central platform to consolidate research capacity, innovation, and human resources by bringing together experts across four strategic domains:1) Health and Medical Sciences; 2) Food and Drugs; 3) Medical Biotechnology; and 4) Agriculture and Environment. This multi-sectoral focus enables cross-disciplinary collaboration, supports high-potential biotech development, and addresses national priorities in sustainable healthcare, agriculture, and food systems.
Key Objectives of MMOH
1. To develop a national hub of experts specializing in microbiome-based medicinal products (MMPs)
- To accelerate translational research from lab to clinic through collaboration between scientists, clinicians, and industry
3. To support public policy development and regulatory frameworks for microbiome-derived health innovations
4. To increase international visibility and impact of Thai microbiome research
5.To build global networks with leading institutions including Murdoch University (Australia), Imperial College London (UK), and Zhejiang University (China)
