“Vacant to Vibrant”: KKU Architecture Students Selected for National Round, Heading to Asian Design Competition

A team of students from the Faculty of Architecture, Khon Kaen University, comprising Mr. Phosathorn Kiara, Mr. Sutthiphong Khamthit, Mr. Wuttichai Kotcha, and Mr. Chayanan Chinnawong, has successfully passed the national selection stage to compete in the ARCASIA Students’ Design Competition 2025 at the ASEAN level. Their project, titled “Vacant to Vibrant,” aims to maximize the value and functionality of underutilized shophouse spaces in Thai cities.

Mr. Sutthiphong Khamthit, representing the team, explained that the inspiration for the project came from observing how shophouses in Thailand often fail to utilize their full potential, particularly upper floors and rooftops. Most owners use only the ground floor for convenience and accessibility, leaving the rest of the space idle. The team proposes transforming these rooftop areas into multifunctional spaces that benefit both owners and surrounding communities. Potential uses include green spaces, exercise areas, vegetable gardens, or even creating “second-level markets” across neighborhoods. If multiple buildings adopt this concept, it will create a new urban ecosystem.

The design approach is compared to a “plug-in” or puzzle piece that enhances existing structures. Just as a missing puzzle piece renders the picture incomplete, Bangkok, despite its abundant facilities, lacks sufficient green spaces. Adding this missing piece would make the city more livable. This innovative solution demonstrates a deep understanding of Thai urban contexts and offers practical strategies for building a better future.

Sutthiphong further stated:

“We take pride in this work regardless of the outcome. At the very least, we have proposed an idea that addresses real urban issues. Starting from small-scale solutions can make cities more livable over time. As we prepare for the ASEAN competition, our team is working systematically with a shared vision to represent Thailand on the regional stage. We aim to present Thai architectural problem-solving approaches to an international audience while ensuring effective communication through strong language and presentation skills.”

Advancing to the ARCASIA Students’ Design Competition 2025 highlights the team’s creativity and capability in tackling urban challenges. “Vacant to Vibrant” not only introduces a new perspective on maximizing shophouse usage but also reflects a profound understanding of Thai social contexts and a vision for sustainable urban development. This achievement positions the team as an excellent representative of Thailand in showcasing innovative Thai ideas to an Asian platform.
