KKU Faculty of Science Pays Tribute to King Rama IV, “The Father of Thai Science,” on National Science Day

On August 18, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University (KKU) organized a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the statue of His Majesty King Mongkut (King Rama IV), known as the “Father of Thai Science,” at the roundabout in front of Science Building 06. The ceremony was held to commemorate the King’s intellectual legacy in science and technology on the occasion of National Science Day 2025.

The event was presided over by Mr. Phanthep Saokosol, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen Province, and attended by representatives from government agencies, faculties, organizations, and institutions across Khon Kaen Province. Asst. Prof. Dr. Angkana Boonyued, Dean of the Faculty of Science, together with administrators, faculty members, and staff, led the ceremonial tribute on behalf of the university community.

As part of the proceedings, the Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen Province presented a floral garland to the statue of King Mongkut, followed by the lighting of candles and incense, and the recitation of a royal homage praising His Majesty’s scientific wisdom. The homage recounted the King’s life as the fourth son of King Rama II and Her Majesty Queen Sri Suriyendra, the Queen Consort of King Rama II his ordination as a Buddhist monk at the age of 21, and his extensive studies in Pali, Greek, Latin, and English, as well as his deep interest in geography, astronomy, advanced mathematics, metallurgy, and meteorology.

Upon ascending the throne, King Mongkut ruled during a time of colonial expansion. With foresight and wisdom, he understood that the survival of Siam depended on demonstrating intellectual capacity equal to Western nations. His mastery in astronomy and mathematics enabled him to predict a solar eclipse at Wa Ko, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, two years in advance with remarkable precision. This prediction astonished the Siamese people and gained widespread recognition internationally, showcasing Siam as a nation of intellect and safeguarding its independence.

In recognition of his scientific contributions, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) honored King Mongkut as a World Eminent Person, and the Thai Cabinet later declared August 18 as National Science Day to commemorate his legacy.
