The Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, held a solemn ceremony to pay respects and mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. The event was attended by Assistant Professor Angkhana Boonyued, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Science; Associate Professor Khacharinh Sirivong, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Administration; Associate Professor Somnuek Worawiset, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Student Development and Alumni Relations; along with executives, lecturers, division heads, and faculty staff. The ceremony took place in the lobby of the Faculty Administration Division, 1st floor, SC.06 Building.

Assistant Professor Angkhana Boonyued, the Dean, delivered a speech expressing profound gratitude for Her Majesty’s royal benevolence and offering condolences.

“On behalf of the Dean, the executives, lecturers, personnel, and students of the Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, we humbly express our deepest sorrow and mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Her Majesty’s royal duties not only promoted arts and culture but also served as a critical patronage for Thailand’s science and technology sector. Her Majesty held a royal vision focused on applying scientific knowledge to solve problems and sustainably enhance the quality of life for the people.

As an institution dedicated to scientific education, we acknowledge Her Majesty’s immense contributions to national development in the following dimensions:

Application of Technology in Vocational Creation: Her Majesty promoted research and development into local wisdom, improving it through scientific principles. A key example is the SUPPORT Foundation (Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand), which applied modern technology to develop fibres, natural dyeing, and craft production processes to meet international standards. This work established intellectual property and famous cultural goods.

Resource Conservation through Scientific Principles: Her Majesty placed significant importance on environmental conservation, particularly forests and wildlife, through various projects. These initiatives utilised biological, ecological, and engineering principles to rehabilitate degraded areas, manage water resources, and establish wildlife breeding centres for conservation purposes.

Promotion of Knowledge and Innovation: Many Royal Initiative Projects served as empirical learning grounds for integrating various disciplines, including science, technology, and agriculture, for sustainable development. This was a significant inspiration that led to the creation of the Queen Sirikit Science Museum, continuing the royal commitment to fostering a scientific society in Thailand.

These royal duties bear witness to Her Majesty’s genius in using science as a tool to improve the quality of life, ensure vocational security, and achieve environmental sustainability. The Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, pledges to inherit and sustain this royal legacy by committing to research and innovation that addresses the development needs of the community and society, following the guidelines initiated by Her Majesty. We do this to express our loyalty and reciprocate Her Majesty’s boundless benevolence.”

Following the speech, attendees observed a moment of silence and proceeded to sign a book of condolences for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, concluding the ceremony.

The ceremony reflects KKU’s profound loyalty and commitment to adopting the royal initiatives as guidelines for developing scientific knowledge and innovation for the lasting benefit of society and the nation.
