Khon Kaen University’s ‘Cultural Square’ Preserves Traditions Across Generations

In a world where technology plays an increasingly rapid role, cultural practices—the fundamental foundations of life—risk being overlooked or lost along the way. To bridge this gap, Khon Kaen University (KKU) established the “Larn Ploen Dern Cultural Square” as part of the Si Than Festival 2025. This initiative is anchored by the concept of “Forn Ram (dancing), Tum Som (papaya salad making), Lorm Wong Mat Tung (ceremonial flag weaving), and Nung Sin (wearing the traditional cloth),” serving as a nexus for cultural exchange. The programme aims to transform true cultural capital into commercial value, driving the community’s economy in a holistic and sustainable manner.

Discussing the event, Dr. Pakinee Plengdisakun from the Faculty of Architecture, who serves as the Chair of the Cultural Square at this year’s Si Than Festival, spoke with immense pride.

“This cooperative effort involves KKU’s arts and culture network along with multiple collaborating government organisations, including the Culture Office, the Provincial Administrative Organisation, Srisangwan School, and over 52 community-based networks. The core purpose is to present the charm of local Isan culture directly to the younger generation and youths,” Dr. Plengdisakun stated.

“They do not need to travel to various communities because those communities have gathered here to present their way of life, local products, and cuisine in one location. These cultural experiences are served up instantly, making it easy for the new generation to absorb and appreciate the culture that is now readily accessible.”
