The Faculty of Engineering, Khon Kaen University, showcased its expertise and research in agricultural drone technology at the press conference for the launch of the “Drone Khon La Krueng Plus Towards Smart Farming” project. Mr. Surasak Phanjarungworakul, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MSHE), presided over the ceremony, which took place in Krachiew Subdistrict, Phachi District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, on 2 December 2025. The initiative aims to elevate Thai agriculture through digital innovation and support farmers in reducing production costs, aligning with the ministry’s objectives.

Associate Professor Khwansri Saengprachathanarak, Ph.D., an academic member of the Faculty of Engineering, Khon Kaen University, and Head of the project “Development of a Community Agricultural Drone Business Model” (funded by the Program Management Unit for Area-Based Development—PMU-A), presented knowledge regarding the use of drones in smart agriculture systems. She highlighted that applying drone technology significantly reduces labour costs and chemical usage, enhances spraying efficiency, and genuinely allows for the development of new careers for farmers. This also reflects the university’s research role in readying academic advancements for tangible area-based development.

The “Drone Khon La Krueng Plus Towards Smart Farming” project is a collaborative effort under the MSHE. It aims to alleviate farmers’ financial burdens by subsidising a portion of drone service fees, providing complimentary soil quality inspections, and organizing free training for “Agricultural Drone Pilots.” This initiative enhances technological skills, enabling farmers and interested parties to utilize drones safely and professionally for their livelihoods. Initially, the pilot project covers the provinces of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, and Pathum Thani, which are crucial rice-producing areas in Thailand. These locations are designated as models for smart agriculture systems meant for future nationwide expansion.

Furthermore, Khon Kaen University participated in the event by hosting an exhibition demonstrating agricultural drones and providing consultation on applying the technology in the agricultural sector. The goal is to promote knowledge, foster understanding, and contribute to the creation of a network of “Agricultural Drone Innovators.” This network will possess the necessary capacity to support the modern agricultural industry and sustainably elevate the quality of life for the public.
