KKU and Mitr Phu Vieng Strengthen Grassroots Economy with Integrated Chicken Farming Workshop

The initiative aims to provide supplementary income and enhance skills for four local community enterprise groups, transitioning them from traditional agriculture to high-value livestock farming in line with the BCG economic model.

On 17 December 2025, the Office of Academic Service and the Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with the Community Relations Department of Mitr Phu Vieng Sugar Factory, continued their mission to promote the grassroots economy by organising the “Workshop on Integrated Chicken Farming Techniques for Farmer Sustainability.”

The project was designed to enhance the capabilities of farmers from four community enterprises: the Safe Vegetable Cultivation Group, the Ban KM.52 Chemical-Free Vegetable Group, the Ban Nong Phai Pattana Safe Vegetable Group, and the Chemical-Free Rice for Health Group. The goal was to equip them with comprehensive knowledge to practise chicken farming according to scientifically sound principles and generate tangible, stable income.

The workshop was honoured to feature Associate Professor Wuttigrai Boonkum, Ph.D., Director of the Centre for Animal Breeding and Omics Research Network at the Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, as the keynote speaker. He delivered a lecture covering the history of Thai native chickens, the processing of chicken meat and egg products to meet established standards, and marketing strategies for broader product distribution.

The training emphasised experiential learning, leading farmers on a tour of the Research Centre’s model farm and facilitating hands-on practice at four learning stations:

  • Breeding and Artificial Insemination Station: Learning techniques for breed selection and flock population growth.
  • Feed Management Station: Techniques for formulating feed to reduce costs and improve quality.
  • Vaccination and Disease Prevention Station: Strengthening flock health and mitigating farming risks.
  • Housing and Incubation Systems Station: Studying housing technology suitable for local climate conditions.

This collaboration represents more than just a transfer of knowledge; it is a tangible implementation of the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model. The workshop promoted the use of biotechnology (Bio) to reduce chemical use, the reuse of chicken manure and agricultural waste (Circular), and environmentally friendly production to create added value (Green). This initiative perfectly aligns with Khon Kaen University’s mission of social dedication and strengthening communities for sustainable growth.
