Students from Khon Kaen University Demonstration School (Secondary Division) have won prestigious awards after presenting their science project at the 14th Regional Congress: Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS 2026). The regional science and mathematics event, held from 9–12 February 2026 in Penang, Malaysia, was organised by the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (SEAMEO RECSAM). Its objectives are to encourage young scientists, develop critical thinking skills, and promote STEM innovation to solve real-world problems.
The student team consisted of Miss Sunatta Leelalawan and Mr. Chinna Nonthing, both Year 8 students (Mathayom 2/4), who presented their project titled, “Smart Light for Green Life: Enhancing Wolffia globosa as a Light-Controlled Biological Machine for Sustainable Nutrition.” Their project advisors were Mr. Somchoke Kaeoutas, Assistant Professor Arak Teer-ampon, Ph.D., and Ms. Charinya Rittiram.
Mr. Chinna Nonthing, one of the project creators, shared his thoughts: “I am delighted to have received such a prestigious award. Presenting our work on a regional stage with representatives from many ASEAN countries is a significant starting point on our path as young scientists and reflects the high-quality education our school has always emphasised.”
Miss Sunatta Leelalawan, his project partner, added, “Participating in SSYS 2026 allowed me to meet young scientists from across ASEAN. We exchanged ideas and learned about diverse approaches to science projects. I was also inspired by the work of our international peers and will use the experience and knowledge gained to further develop our science project in the future.”
Out of 173 secondary school projects selected for presentation from countries across Southeast Asia, the students’ project was awarded two silver medals: the SILVER MEDALIST Special Award for Creativity/Innovation and the SILVER MEDALIST Outstanding Award for Project Report.
