On 21 March 2026, the Institute for Research and Development in Teaching Profession for ASEAN (IRDTP) organised the “Project to Develop Essential Skills for Japanese Language Teachers in the AI Era”. The initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge, understanding, and necessary skills for Japanese language instructors to effectively manage teaching and learning in the age of artificial intelligence. It also sought to encourage secondary school Japanese teachers to apply appropriate AI technology and digital tools in designing learning activities and fostering student development.
Assistant Professor Pongsathun Saejoo, Ph.D., Director of IRDTP, delivered the opening address and, along with executives and staff, warmly welcomed the participants to the training at meeting room 2201 in the second building of the Institute.
Assistant Professor Saejoo stated, “This training aims to strengthen competencies in critical thinking and the creation of teaching innovations. It also prepares Japanese language teachers to meet the challenges of the digital age and builds a collaborative network for knowledge exchange among Japanese teachers from primary and secondary schools nationwide.”
The event featured a special lecture by Associate Professor Hideaki Ito, Ph.D., from the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, on the topic, “Designing Japanese Language Lessons that Enhance Learner Potential in the AI Learning Environment.”
Participants also enhanced their skills through a workshop titled “Using Fonts to Create Digital Japanese Learning Materials,” led by Ms. Haruna Otake, a Japanese font specialist from Morisawa Inc. The session was co-facilitated by faculty members from the Japanese Language Teaching Programme at the Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University, including Assistant Professor Watchara Suyara, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Amonrat Manopan.
During the training, participants learned to design lessons using the Backward Design concept and to develop their interaction skills with learners through encouragement, questioning, and post-lesson reflection. The event also provided a valuable opportunity for teachers from across the country to exchange knowledge and build a professional network, which will contribute to elevating the quality of Japanese language instruction and promoting sustainable student development.
This project aligns with the Institute’s commitment to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all (SDG 4). It also supports educational policies that emphasise the integration of AI technology to enhance the digital competencies of teachers and educational personnel.
