KKU Physical Therapy Integrates Learning with Community Service for Sustainable Elderly Care

On 16 March 2026, the Division of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Associated Medical Sciences, Khon Kaen University, organised a community academic service event for the elderly at the Khon Kaen Social Welfare Development Centre for Older Persons in Samran Sub-district, Khon Kaen Province.

The event was led by an academic team including Professor Taweesak Janyacharoen, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor Wilairat Namwong, Ph.D.; Dr. Saowanee Nakmareong; Associate Professor Thiwabhorn Thaweewannakij, Ph.D.; Dr. Arpassanan Wiyanad; and Dr. Piangdaw Adchaithor. They were joined by other faculty members who closely supervised the activities. The event was attended by approximately 30 elderly individuals, most of whom were in the active ageing group, with third-year physical therapy students facilitating the programme.

Professor Taweesak Janyacharoen, Head of the Division of Physical Therapy, stated, “The objective of this community academic service is to encourage students to apply their theoretical and practical knowledge to the real-world care of the elderly. It also aims to develop their skills in planning, teamwork, and leadership, while simultaneously promoting the physical and cognitive health of the elderly in the community.”

The Division of Physical Therapy organised a variety of activities, including preliminary health screenings and vital signs measurement, physical fitness and fall risk assessments, and cognitive function evaluations. The programme also featured health-promoting recreational activities and educational sessions on health and appropriate exercises for the elderly.

This project reflects the Faculty’s role in providing academic services to society while developing community-focused service models that meet genuine local needs. It also provides students with hands-on learning experiences, enhancing both their professional skills and their sense of social responsibility.

The Faculty of Associated Medical Sciences extends its sincere gratitude to the Khon Kaen Social Welfare Development Centre for Older Persons and all involved parties for their invaluable support and collaboration in advancing social services to improve the quality of life for the elderly and build a society that supports active and healthy ageing.
