Faculty of Science Welcomes Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to Exchange Knowledge on Elevating Laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 International Standards

On 26 May 2026, the Faculty of Science at Khon Kaen University reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in scientific standards and innovation by hosting an institutional study visit for executives and personnel from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Khon Kaen University. The visit focused on knowledge exchange regarding international laboratory standard systems, aligning with the university’s “SMART” organisational values—specifically Management by Factual Information (M) and Teamwork with Networks (T).

Assistant Professor Angkana Boonyued, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Science, officially welcomed Associate Professor Patchara Phuektes, D.V.M., Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research and Academic Services of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, along with a delegation of 10 participants. The study visit was organised to exchange insights into the implementation and operation of the ISO/IEC 17025 quality management system at the Department of Microbiology’s laboratories, held at the Applied Microbiology and Biochemistry Laboratory Building, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University.

A team of scientific experts and faculty members served as keynote speakers, sharing in-depth technical knowledge and guiding the delegation through operational processes across five critical checkpoints. The sessions were led by Assistant Professor Polsan Mahakhan, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Wiyada Mongkolthanaruk, Ph.D., lecturers from the Department of Microbiology, alongside Ms. Penpak Khamkaew, Senior Professional Scientific Technical Officer, Ms. Alisa Poungjampa, and Ms. Wetanee Buttapakt, Scientists. The hands-on demonstration covered the following core operational areas:

  • Station 1: Sample Receiving and Registration

  • Station 2: Microbiology Testing Area and environmental control management adhering to strict international criteria

  • Station 3: Equipment Management and Calibration, including advanced maintenance techniques for high-precision measuring instruments

  • Station 4: Storage Management for culture media, chemical reagents, and reference materials

  • Station 5: Infectious Waste Management and Biosafety protocols

This knowledge-sharing initiative marks a significant step in building a collaborative network among internal faculties within Khon Kaen University. By focusing on the ISO/IEC 17025 standard—the premier global benchmark for testing and calibration laboratories—the collaboration aims to elevate the quality of laboratory operations and academic services to meet international standards.

Ultimately, this partnership reflects KKU’s strategic emphasis on knowledge management and peer-to-peer institutional support. By sharing practical expertise, both faculties enhance the university’s overall research capacity and academic service potential. This collective development fosters public confidence in the university’s scientific services, contributing to long-term national development and sustainable societal impact.
