Khon Kaen University hosts the traditional “Tie the Threads for KKU Freshmen 2026” event to foster unity and embrace new students into the Mor Din Daeng community.
On 15 June 2026, Khon Kaen University held the traditional welcoming ceremony, “Tie the Threads for KKU Freshmen 2026”, to grandly welcome its 63rd cohort, traditionally known as the 63rd Kalapruek flower cluster. The event took place at the New Multi-Purpose Gymnasium and the 50th Anniversary Stadium. Associate Professor Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University, alongside Mr Phanthep Saokoson, Vice Governor of Khon Kaen Province, presided over the ceremony and delivered welcoming addresses. The auspicious occasion was attended by university executives, faculty members, alumni, and senior students who gathered to perform the traditional baisri su khwan (soul-tying) ceremony and mark a warm and propitious beginning for the new students’ university life.
The afternoon segment began with freshman registration at the New Multi-Purpose Gymnasium, where senior recreational teams and student volunteers provided a lively welcome with ice-breaking activities. As evening approached, the freshmen processed in organised groups from the gymnasium into the 50th Anniversary Stadium, accompanied by performances from the Sinsai Pong Lang Ensemble. Following the entry of the sacred baisri offerings and the university executive procession into the ceremonial pavilion, the Mor Din Daeng Creative Dance Team performed the “Fon Baisri Luang” (Great Baisri Dance) to open the ritual.
Associate Professor Panthongviriyakul delivered an orientation address, welcoming the new students and noting that entering the university marks a memorable milestone under the shade of the Kalapruek tree. He said that the university is committed to developing graduates equipped with knowledge, virtue, and social responsibility, ready to face global changes with wisdom and critical thinking.
“Today’s activity is more than just a ritual; it is a bridge of connection that links the institution to its students, and seniors to freshmen, forging a shared pride in our Mor Din Daeng identity,” the President remarked. “I encourage all students to dare to dream, think courageously, and make the most of their time at the university to discover themselves and build lasting friendships, growing into global citizens of high calibre.”
Mr Phanthep Saokoson, Vice Governor of Khon Kaen Province, extended a warm welcome on behalf of the province, expressing pleasure that the students have arrived in Khon Kaen, the regional hub of the north-east. He congratulated parents on their children’s admission to a leading national institution. The Vice Governor also invoked the blessings of sacred local sites, including Phra Lap, the City Pillar Shrine, and Phra That Kham Kaen, for the freshmen’s success, and wished them happiness in their studies and success in becoming graduates who contribute meaningfully to society.
Mr Sathirawit Kingkaew, President of the Khon Kaen University Student Organisation for 2026, described the background of the event, noting that the Student Organisation, Student Council, recreational teams, and volunteers spent more than three months collaborating to ensure full readiness. This year’s theme, ‘Isan Classic’, adopted a modern Suntaraphorn style to create a warm, nostalgic, and elegant atmosphere.
“While last year’s theme focused on Phra That Phanom, this year we wanted to officially welcome the freshmen to Khon Kaen Province as they step onto campus,” Mr Kingkaew explained. “We highlighted the distinct identity of Khon Kaen city to create a sense of warmth and an unforgettable first impression as they enter their new home.”
Following this ceremony, upcoming orientation activities include the “Hug Phaeng Paeng Pun: Fostering Creative Bonds among Mor Din Daeng Freshmen” group integration event on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, at the KKU NEO Stadium. This will be followed by the official University Orientation on Thursday, 18 June 2026, at the Golden Jubilee Convention Hall, ensuring the 63rd cohort of Kalapruek freshmen transition proudly into active university life.
