KKU Unlocks Over 2,000 Intellectual Property Items to Drive Research Transformation and Sustainable Commercialisation

The initiative aims to transition academic research from supply-side interests to demand-driven commercial products, fostering a robust innovation ecosystem.

Under the vision of becoming “A World-Leading Research and Development University”, Khon Kaen University has announced a pivotal Research Transformation strategy. This initiative shifts academic research from being driven mainly by researchers’ individual interests (supply-side) to addressing user demand and urgent national issues (demand-side). The goal is to cultivate an innovation ecosystem capable of converting research outcomes into viable commercial products and solutions.

Associate Professor Pensri Jaroenwanit, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs and Innovation Commercialization at Khon Kaen University, elaborated on the core mission, stating that innovation commercialisation involves utilising new creations—whether adapted or newly developed—to generate tangible benefits through commercial trade. KKU currently holds nearly 2,000 registered intellectual property (IP) items. The current challenge is to leverage these assets to generate both monetary and non-monetary value, thereby ensuring a sustainable revolving budget for the university to continuously support future innovations.

Associate Professor Jaroenwanit added that to enable a systematic, efficient transition from research to commercial business, the university has established four primary operational mechanisms:

  •     Product, Research, and Intellectual Property Management: KKU compiles and manages products, research, and intellectual property assets to support market placement and investment. This work includes compiling a “Sales Sheet Catalogue” and organising the “KKU Enterprise Demo Day”, which gives researchers a platform to pitch their work directly to investors and entrepreneurs.
  •     Integrated Marketing Management: The university has launched “KKU Market”, its first e-commerce platform. This platform manages marketing activities, institutional communications, and branding for research-derived products from both the university and its business partners.
  •     Investment Management and Private Joint Ventures: The university provides insights for strategic investment decisions, facilitating connections with domestic and international investors while promoting appropriate joint-venture models with the private sector.
  •     Partnership Network Building: KKU focuses on establishing and expanding collaborative networks with businesses, entrepreneurs, government agencies, and other higher education institutions to build sustainable co-business opportunities.

In addition to these mechanisms, a major milestone this year is the launch of the “KKU Intellectual Property-Based Startup Incubation Programme”. This project links student affairs with innovation commercialisation. Assoc. Prof. Jaroenwanit noted that the initiative operates in close collaboration with the KKU Startup Club to nurture an entrepreneurial spirit among the new generation, utilising the university’s research and intellectual property assets as the foundation for new business ventures.

“The direction of this innovation commercialisation drive is not merely about managing assets to generate institutional revenue,” Assoc. Prof. Jaroenwanit emphasised. “It is a core component of developing ‘next-generation graduates’ aligned with the EGGS Identity framework, which guides the cultivation of distinctive student attributes. This particularly focuses on the Entrepreneurial (E) dimension, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset that recognises opportunities and possesses the drive to create businesses.”

Unlocking this repository of nearly 2,000 intellectual property items supports Khon Kaen University’s goal of becoming an institution of global societal value. It also positions KKU as a leader in innovation-driven development, contributing to sustainable national economic growth in line with the university’s institutional transformation goals.
