Decoding the Secrets of Institutional Success: KKU Hosts Strategic SAR Workshop to Propel Maejo University Towards International Higher Education Standards

The practical session transformed routine self-assessment reports into dynamic strategic instruments to accelerate organizational growth and performance excellence.

The Office of Academic Service, in collaboration with the Graduate School at Khon Kaen University (KKU), organised a workshop titled “SAR Writing for Driving Institutional Excellence Based on EdPEx Criteria”. Held from 9 to 11 July 2026 at the Soi Suwanna Room within the Office of Academic Service, the initiative was designed specifically for the executives and personnel of the Faculty of Information and Communication at Maejo University. Using a workshop-based learning approach, the programme aimed to move the SAR beyond a routine regulatory obligation into an active strategic tool that fully captures institutional achievements.

The workshop used real operational data from Maejo University’s Faculty of Information and Communication to decode the strategic turnaround of the faculty, which has emerged as one of the fastest-growing entities within its university. This rapid organisational development is demonstrated by measurable milestones, including an annual student intake that surged from 70 students to nearly 500 students per cohort within a seven-year period. The faculty also achieved substantial financial sustainability, with annual revenue growth of several million baht and improved productivity among executives, faculty members, and support staff — translating into strong outcomes in graduate employability and institutional revenue.

Prof. Kiatichai Faksri, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School and the principal speaker of the project, provided a structured roadmap for drafting the report. He advised participants to move away from isolated, category-by-category narrative descriptions and instead adopt a cohesive “Story of Success” framework that links organisational sub-systems together. He also emphasised the integration of empirical evidence, such as comparative visual documentation showing institutional transformation and real-time data dashboards, to build evaluators’ confidence during external quality assessments.

Assoc. Prof. Somkiat Chaipiboon, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication at Maejo University, outlined the long-term vision to transform the faculty into a High-Value Organisation. Guided by the core institutional values of “INSEE” (Innovation, Novelty, and Creative Communication), the faculty has established ambitious strategic targets for its next developmental phases, categorised under Horizons 2 and 3. These targets include securing a starting salary threshold of 25,000 baht for its graduates and substantially increasing institutional revenue streams through specialised non-degree short courses tailored to real-world labour market demands.

This collaborative engagement equipped the Faculty of Information and Communication at Maejo University with an evaluative SAR built on rigorous EdPEx quality criteria. Beyond supporting its academic partners, the initiative reflects Khon Kaen University’s status as a benchmark institution recognised nationally for organisational excellence. By sharing these proven capabilities and best practices, KKU continues to fulfil its broader mission of institutional development, helping raise the standard of Thai higher education administration to international levels.
