The collaboration aims to accelerate the translation of advanced medical research into clinical cancer treatments while driving commercial innovation in cellular therapy.
On 13 July 2026, Khon Kaen University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for “The Development and Transfer of Technology and Innovation to Enhance Knowledge in Cellular Immunotherapy for Medical Treatment” with Wincell Research Co., Ltd. The signing ceremony was co-led by Prof. Thidarut Boonmars, D.V.M., Ph.D., Vice President for Enterprise and Societal Sustainability, and Asst. Prof. Wiyada Punjaruk, M.D., Director of The Cellular Therapy Center, who signed the agreement alongside Oran Piamkulvanich, M.D., Managing Director of Wincell Research Co., Ltd. The event was held at the Sarasin Meeting Room, Sirikunakorn Building, Khon Kaen University.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to strengthen academic cooperation in generating advanced knowledge on the culturing, expansion, and cryopreservation of cellular immunotherapy components, specifically Natural Killer (NK) cells and Dendritic cells (DC). The partnership also aims to support long-term research, technological advancement, and innovation while progressively upgrading institutional knowledge in this highly specialised field.
Prof. Boonmars said the partnership aims to advance Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), transforming laboratory research into clinical translations that directly benefit patients. She highlighted that Khon Kaen University (KKU) has a strong healthcare environment and cleanroom laboratory facilities built to European standards, which are currently undergoing Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Collaborating with the private sector will accelerate the commercialisation of these innovations, raising the standard of healthcare for both Thai and international populations.
Asst. Prof. Punjaruk said this partnership serves as an important piece completing the framework of advanced medical development. By integrating the commercial and marketing expertise of Wincell Research with the university’s academic expertise, the initiative will advance NK cell and Dendritic cell therapies for cancer patients, positioning KKU as a leading regional medical and wellness hub.
Dr. Piamkulvanich said Wincell Research has a long-standing commitment to developing cell therapy, earning trust from prominent international partners in Japan. He noted that collaborating with KKU is an excellent opportunity given the university’s research standards and systematic workflows, adding that the company is ready to apply its cell-culturing expertise to deliver real benefits to patients.
Under the terms of the two-year agreement—effective from 13 July 2026 until 12 July 2028—KKU, through The Cellular Therapy Center, will provide academic support to advance research and innovation, develop personnel, and offer expert consultations. It will also serve as a dedicated learning and study site for medical personnel interested in cellular immunotherapy processes. Wincell Research Co., Ltd. will supply expert personnel, equipment, tools, and laboratory services to support education and research. This collaboration reflects KKU’s commitment to academic excellence, research and innovation, and social contribution to the medical community.
