On 22 July 2026, researchers from the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with paediatric ophthalmology specialists from the Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University (KKU), announced the development of advanced software designed to assess visual disorders and double vision (diplopia). This interdisciplinary project was executed under a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two faculties, aimed at translating engineering concepts into clinical healthcare solutions.
The development team was led by Asst. Prof. Wichcha Fuangchan, Ph.D., and Dr. Nawapak Eua-anant from the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, alongside Asst. Prof. Sirinya Suwannaraj, M.D., an ophthalmologist specialising in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus from the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine.
During the official handover event, the joint research team conducted a live demonstration of the latest software iteration for Prof. Olan Suwan-apichon, M.D., Associate Dean for Human Resources Development at the Faculty of Medicine, who formally accepted the diagnostic system prototype on behalf of the faculty.
The newly developed software measures horizontal and vertical ocular deviation angles, converting the values directly into Prism Dioptres (PD). It automatically classifies the specific type of strabismus and generates a detailed assessment summary across nine cardinal directions of gaze. By automating these complex clinical measurements, the technology reduces examination time while increasing diagnostic accuracy for patients presenting with binocular vision anomalies.
This milestone reflects Khon Kaen University’s ongoing commitment to medical technology innovation and cross-faculty research synergy. By integrating artificial intelligence and computer engineering with specialised clinical practice, KKU continues to advance practical healthcare technologies that directly improve diagnostic workflows and patient outcomes in regional and national healthcare systems.
