The collaboration establishes the Kaen-Coon AI Cluster to empower students, researchers, and interdisciplinary innovation across Khon Kaen University.
KHON KAEN, THAILAND — On 3 August 2026, at 11:45 hrs, the College of Computing at Khon Kaen University (KKU) announced a strategic collaboration with industry leaders Lenovo and AMD to advance its artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem. Together, the partners have developed the “Kaen-Coon AI Cluster,” a high-performance computing infrastructure designed to support comprehensive learning, advanced research, and transformative innovation across the university.
The initiative reflects the vision of the College of Computing to transition into an AI-Native Institute. This strategy focuses on creating an environment where students, researchers, and innovators enjoy equitable access to advanced computing resources. It also promotes interdisciplinary research aimed at generating a positive, sustainable impact on society.
Assoc. Prof. Sirapat Chiewchanwattana, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Computing at KKU, stated that the institute’s vision is to build a truly AI-driven institution where high-performance technology serves as a foundation for every learner, researcher, and innovator. Through this strategic partnership with Lenovo and AMD, KKU is building an ecosystem that accelerates AI innovation, supports interdisciplinary research, and addresses real-world societal challenges.
The AI infrastructure is tailored to support the specialised AI curricula of the College of Computing, providing students with direct experience in handling cutting-edge technologies ranging from Computer Vision to Large Language Models (LLMs). Furthermore, the facility serves as a shared computational resource for faculty members and researchers across various disciplines within KKU.
Asst. Prof. Praisan Padungweang, Ph.D., Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Programme at the College of Computing, explained that the primary objective of establishing this on-campus infrastructure is to allow students to gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art technologies. The Kaen-Coon AI Cluster accommodates multi-user workloads across instruction, academic research, and community service projects. The architecture enables GPU resources to be partitioned for simultaneous model training by large groups of students or aggregated for high-performance research projects. The system is efficiently managed via Lenovo Intelligent Computing Orchestration (LiCO), which optimises resource management, job queuing, and future infrastructure expansion.
Currently, the Kaen-Coon AI Cluster supports diverse research initiatives and practical applications. Key projects include medical image analysis for breast cancer cell classification, brain tumour segmentation, real-time industrial defect detection, and diffusion-model development for chest X-ray analysis. The infrastructure also provides students enrolled in the artificial intelligence programme with practical experience on industry-grade technology.
Asst. Prof. Padungweang added that operating an in-house AI cluster opens up considerable new possibilities. KKU is currently developing its own local large language model (LLM), and the college remains confident that the infrastructure developed alongside Lenovo and AMD will serve as a major catalyst for a new wave of AI innovation across all academic disciplines at the university.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the College of Computing at KKU in building international-standard AI infrastructure. The initiative reinforces the university’s mission to cultivate high-calibre personnel, advance frontier research, and deliver scalable innovations that address national challenges and benefit society over the long term.
