KKU welcomes over 1,200 athletes and officials from 32 higher education institutions across Thailand for a 64-match tournament integrating Sustainable Development Goals into university sports.

Khon Kaen University has been honoured by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) to host the final round of the 4th Thailand University Football Championship. Held in Khon Kaen Province from 3 to 14 August 2026, the tournament brings together 32 higher education institutions from five regions, featuring over 1,200 athletes, coaches, and officials competing in 64 matches across six standard venues.

The official opening ceremony took place on 3 August 2026 at the 50th Anniversary Stadium, Khon Kaen University. The event was presided over by Mr Danuporn Punnakanta, Vice Minister for Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, alongside ministry executives, university leaders, representatives from the public and private sectors, faculty members, staff, and athletes. The ceremony concluded with a cover dance performance by students from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, followed by a special inaugural VIP friendly match between KKU and the MHESI All-Star team.

In his opening address, Mr. Danuporn Punnakan, Assistant Minister attached to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, presided over the opening ceremony. commended Khon Kaen University, the organising committee, and all supporting sectors for their meticulous preparations in facility readiness, tournament management, medical services, security, and hospitality, noting that these efforts demonstrate KKU’s strong capability as a national host. He added that the championship serves as a vital platform for holistic student development—fostering discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and sportsmanship—while building networks of friendship and cooperation among higher education institutions nationwide.

Associate Professor Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University, extended a warm welcome to all participants, expressing gratitude to MHESI for entrusting the university with this prestigious event. He emphasised that KKU has prepared six standard venues alongside live broadcast coverage for all matches, comprehensive medical and safety protocols, and full welfare facilities to ensure a transparent, safe, and professional competition.

Associate Professor Panthongviriyakul highlighted that this year’s tournament operates under the concept of “Sports for Sustainable Development.” By integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into sports management, the championship promotes health and well-being, equality, responsible resource management, and inter-institutional partnerships. This alignment directly reflects KKU’s vision to utilise sports beyond competition—as a mechanism for youth development and sustainable social impact.

Associate Professor Charnchai Suksuwan, Ph.D., Chairman of the Championship Organising Committee, stated that the tournament plays an essential role in fostering 21st-century skills, leadership, and ethical values alongside academic development. He reaffirmed that the committee is dedicated to executing all operations with transparency, fairness, safety, and professionalism to sustainably elevate the standard of university sports in Thailand.

Additionally, Associate Professor Pensri Jaroenwanit, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs and Innovation Commercialisation, delivered the event report, noting that the championship aims to propel university football toward excellence while instilling discipline, mutual respect, and unity among students. She added that these qualities are fundamental to developing well-rounded graduates who contribute positively to society.

Gathering 32 higher education institutions for 64 matches over 12 days, the 4th Thailand University Football Championship underscores Khon Kaen University’s commitment to student-centred development, health promotion, and cross-institutional collaboration, advancing sustainable growth through the power of sports.
