On 11 August 2026, the Faculty of Agriculture at Khon Kaen University hosted an experiential learning event titled “Creative Rice Planting: Nurturing Dreams of the New-Generation Farmers.” The event was organised in collaboration with the Khon Kaen University Demonstration School (Kindergarten Section). Assoc. Prof. Darunee Jothityangkoon, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, presided over the opening ceremony, while Ms. Angkanawan Thamma, Deputy Director of the Khon Kaen University Demonstration School (Kindergarten Section), presented the report. The event brought together 575 kindergarten students across 14 classes (Kindergarten 1 and 2), together with Assoc. Prof. Khundech Surihan, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Administration, and Dr. Prakasit Duangpapeng, Assistant Dean for Student Development and Alumni Relations. Over 900 participants, including faculty members, student assistants, teachers, and parents, gathered at the experimental paddy field inside the Agricultural Technology Park, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University.
The primary objective of the initiative was to give young learners firsthand experience of traditional rice cultivation through out-of-classroom learning. Beyond technical exposure, the activity emphasised developing essential soft skills, such as interpersonal communication, problem-solving, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. The project also aimed to cultivate respect for the farming profession and to highlight the essential value of rice under the concept: “Planting on Mother’s Day (12 August), Harvesting on Father’s Day (5 December).” Additionally, university students assisting with the event earned volunteer service hours.
Assoc. Prof. Jothityangkoon noted that the event sought to foster environmental awareness and to preserve Thai agricultural culture among the youth. The activity used the “KKU 60-2” rice variety, developed jointly by the Faculty of Agriculture and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) as part of a project to conserve and utilise local rice germplasm. Officially certified by the Department of Agriculture on 13 February 2024, KKU 60-2 features strong stalks, an average height of 154 centimetres, photoperiod sensitivity, and superior cooking qualities with a pleasing aroma and soft texture. This combination makes it an ideal crop for students to study, from planting to nutritional consumption.
Ms. Thamma highlighted that direct engagement in rice transplantation helps young children understand nature, food production processes, and the vital role of agriculture. Under the close guidance of faculty members, university students, teachers, and parents, children touched the soil and practised planting rice themselves. She emphasised that the event creatively connected agricultural knowledge with early childhood education.
“Creative Rice Planting: Nurturing Dreams of the New-Generation Farmers” provided both an engaging educational experience and a foundational understanding of agricultural professions. By cultivating an appreciation for natural resources, food security, and indigenous wisdom, the initiative reflects Khon Kaen University’s commitment to community engagement, social contribution, and holistic early childhood development.
