Khon Kaen University has marked a major milestone in regional music education and orchestral excellence with its inaugural joint performance.
On 29 August 2026, at 14:54 hrs, the Western Music Programme of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts joined the Music Education Programme (Western Music Group) of the Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University (KKU). Together, they hosted the grand premiere of “CONCERT KKU Orchestra” at the FA Theatre. Organised under the theme “Harmony of Inspiration Through Orchestral Excellence”, the ceremony was presided over by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University. The event drew a large audience of university administrators, faculty members, staff, students, and members of the public, who filled the auditorium to capacity.
In his opening address, Assoc. Prof. Panthongviriyakul argued that well-rounded national development requires aesthetic and spiritual growth alongside technological and economic advancement. He commended the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts for its continuing contribution to the region’s artistic and cultural life.
“The establishment of the KKU Orchestra stems from our determination to establish Khon Kaen University as a principal pillar in youth development and Western music education across the North-East,” stated the President. “We aim to elevate the practical skills of local youth and music educators, and to foster leadership through music that meets international standards. We also aim to transmit Isan cultural identity through Western classical arrangements, supporting the vision of a ‘New Isan’ that harmoniously integrates diverse cultures. The flawless harmony of an orchestra relies on shared dedication, rigorous rehearsal, and the unity of all musicians. KKU is proud to offer this platform where our faculty, students, and local youth can showcase their potential.”
Dr. Pitikiat Jantarajaturaphat, Brass Instructor at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts and Primary Conductor, said the premiere’s programme, headlined by Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band, reflected the ensemble’s commitment to international standards. He emphasised that a high-quality orchestra in Khon Kaen gives local youth valuable opportunities to develop collaborative skills and showcase their capabilities without travelling to Bangkok. This directly strengthens liveability in the region.
Ajarn Phattrachattra Thongma, String Instructor at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts and Co-Conductor, explained that training students from two different academic backgrounds demanded strong discipline and teamwork. She added that beyond the main orchestra, the initiative fosters small ensembles—such as the Trombone Quartet, Trumpet Ensemble, and Saxophone Quartet—to refine the individual technique and ensemble listening skills a professional career demands.
The performance featured world-renowned classical compositions, including Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band, Jean Sibelius’s Andante Festivo, and Robert W. Smith’s Into the Storm. These were seamlessly integrated with orchestral renditions of timeless Thai compositions, including Yard Phet, Phrom Likhit, Kham Wan, and Phra Chenduriyang’s Sri Ayutthaya. The concert concluded with a standing ovation and prolonged applause.
Officially established on 15 March 2026, the KKU Orchestra serves as an integrated platform for performance, education, and academic service. Prior to its formal debut, the ensemble performed at several university and public events, including the grand opening of the Central Khon Kaen Campus centre on 20 May 2026 and the Visual Arts Curriculum Seminar on 22 June 2026. This successful debut marks a significant step in enriching the artistic ecosystem of Khon Kaen University and the region.
