         On Tuesday April 11, 2017, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kittichai Trairatanasirichai, Khon Kaen University President travelled to present an Honorary Doctorate Degree in International Affairs to Dr. Thonglun Seesulid, Prime Minister of Lao PDR at the Office of the Prime Minister, Vientiane.

 

        Khon Kaen University Council unanimously agreed on September 17, 2016 to confer an Honorary Doctorate Degree in international in International Affairs upon Dr. Thonglun Seesulid, Prime Minister of the People’s Democratic Republic of Lao. Thus, on April 11, 2017, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kittichai Trairatanasirichai, Khon Kaen University President led a group of delegation from Khon Kaen University, comprising Honorary Professor Dr. Sastri Saowakhon (MD), Mr. Suraphon Phetwara, and Mr. Chalermchai Wongnakphet, qualified members of the University Council; Mr. Amnat Prommasutr, President of the University Affairs Promotion Committee; Mr. Somsak Taecharoenwiriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University Alumni; Professor Dr. La-orsri Sanohmuang, Dean of International College; Asst. Prof. Dr. Denpong Sudphakdee, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Communications; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prapansak Chaweerat, Director of Academic Development and Administration; Asst. Prof. Dr. Piyawat Saiphan, Deputy Director of Academic Development and Administration; and a number of administrators and officers totaling 18 people to confer an Honorary Doctorate Degree in international in International Affairs upon Dr. Thonglun Seesulid, Prime Minister of the People’s Democratic Republic of Lao at the Office of the Prime Minister, Vientiane.

 

         An honorary degree of Khon Kaen University is the degree that the University will present to a person who has knowledge, competence, and succeeds excellently in the relevant profession. The individual who receives the honorary degree has performed outstanding tasks until being accepted and a being model for others, besides his or her dedication to the society in the field related to the degree. Dr. Thonglun Seesulid henceforth has the pride and rights of the honorary degree bestowed upon him.

       On this occasion, Professor Dr. La-orsri Sanohmuang, Dean of International College, the college offering degree in international affairs presented the academic gown to Dr. Thonglun Seesulid, Prime Minister of Lao PDR, Khon Kaen University President presented the honorary degree certificate, Honorary Professor Dr. Sastri Saowakhon (MD), qualified member of the University Council presented the honorary degree citation, Mr. Suraphon Phetwara, qualified member of the University Council presented a congratulating gift of a piece of indigenous Thai silk, Mr. Amnat Prommasutr, President of the University Affairs Promotion Committee, the organization that nominated Dr. Thonglun Seesulid as one of the honorary degree candidates, presented a piece of indigenous Thai silk to congratulate Dr. Seesulid Mr. Somsak Taecharoenwiriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University Alumni presented a basket of gift to Dr. Thonglun Seesulid, Prime Minister of Lao PDR.

       Dr. Thonglun Seesulid is a key person who contributes to the promotion of relationships and collaboration at many levels between People’s Democratic Republic of Lao and Thailand. He played a major role in the coordination part when Mr. Jummalee Chaiyason, President of Lao PDR was granted the most exalted order of the white elephant from His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on March 19, 2010 at the Royal Embassy in Vientiane. He also made a visit and was a royal guest of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej from April 12 to 14, 2009, owing to his being the president of the Lao PDR-Thai collaboration and promoting of economic relation at the border of Lao PDR and Thailand. Moreover, Dr. Thonglun Seesulid also supported the construction of communication networks that connect Lao PDR and Thailand such as the Third Friendship Bridge (Kham Muan of Lao PDR and Nakhopanom), Lao PDR-Thailand railway connecting Vietnam and Bangkoj. This will be the first railway line in Lao PDR that links two capitals. Moreover, Dr. Thonglun Seesulid supports collaboration under Me Kong sub-region of ASEAN and the strategic cooperation for economy among Irawadee – Chao Phraya – MeKong.  

 

         After the honorary degree conferral, President of Khon Kaen University led Khon Kaen University delegates to pour scented water onto the hands of Prime Minister of Lao PDR and asked for blessing as it was the occasion of Songkran 2017.
