On January 15, 2019 – KKU associating with Sahamongkolfilm organized press conference, and Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, presided over. Also, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham, Dean of Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Mr. Nuntawut Poophasuk, an art and culture researcher of Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Khon Kaen University, and Mr. Prachya Pinkaew, a film director, attended the conference. Moreover, there were a lot of research team, students, and people joined the conference at Complex Center, Khon Kaen University.

Mo Lum is traditional Isan folk song. The film entitled “Mor Lum Mania” has been developed from a research on roots of culture into the film for soul. It started from master degree research of Mr. Nuntawut Poophasuk in the topic of Mo Lum performance improvement for the production of Mo Lum Mania. The research objectives are to study the progress of Mo Lum Sing and to study film production process.
Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul said that KKU research meeting with press conference was one of the missions that KKU had been doing to indicate that KKU research could be developed into different forms of knowledge such as innovation, science and technology, and arts. For example, this research by Mr. Nuntawut Poophasuk had been developed from the research on roots of Isan culture like Mo Lum into a film production. This successful research led to research and nation development which were a part of KKU’s missions. KKU folks were proud of our research that could be applied for benefits of society.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham revealed that he was proud of Mo Lum, the roots of Isan culture, that researchers saw its value and presented it in the form of film which everyone can enjoy.

“Normally, people who listen to Mo Lum are elderly people while young people watch films, so presenting Mo Lum in film is a challenging issue. However, This film presents Mo Lum through artistic style with fun story that people at any age can watch,” he said.

Mr. Nuntawut Poophasuk, as a film director, said that he studied master degree of arts at Khon Kaen University. He was required to do thesis, and he had created a short movie entitled “Mo Lum Mania.” After Mr. Prachya Pinkaew had seen its trailer, he developed it into a long movie.

“Culture without dynamic is dead, but Mo Lum never dies because it can be adjusted to society at different age. Therefore, research findings obtained in the form of film were presented in modern style. The audience can enjoy watching the movie and learn about Mo Lum as traditional culture reflected through actors and actress of young generation. Moreover, we tried to present new perspective for editing,” he said.

Mr. Prachya Pinkaew stated that this film was a perfect combination between determination to show value of Mo Lum and commercial aspect making the movie accessible by everyone.

“This film is in the middle of academic and commercial because the audience can be entertained and gain knowledge that this researcher has tried to present to the society at the same time. From all Isan films, we can say that this is the first film considered as a model of presenting research findings in the form of entertainment,” he said.

The story of Mo Lum Mania starts from 3 men having a dream of starting Mo Lum musical band that people worldwide can access and appreciate. This is like the reflection of young generation’s great dream – young people want to dream too big that they have to face with many challenges.
