KKU Hosts Training on Ethics of Animal Use for Scientific Purposes, Aiming to Promote High-Quality Research Standards

KKU, August 01, 2025 – Faculty of Agriculture and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) collaborated to host a training session on “Ethics of Animal Use for Scientific Purposes”. The event took place at Room 5101, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, and was attended by 215 faculty members, staff, and students.

The training was officially opened by Associate Professor Darunee Chotithayangkoon, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture. 

Knowledge and expertise were shared by prominent members of KKU-IACUC.

  • Prof. Upa Kookongviriyapan – The Importance of Ethics and the Animals for Scientific Purposes Act, B.E. 2558
  • Asst. Prof. Sirintip Boonjaraspinyo – Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes
  • Assoc. Prof. Sompoch Veerakul- Internationally Standardized Techniques for Handling Aquatic Animals
  • Asst. Prof. Suvaluk Seesupa- Principles and Methods for Calculating Sample Sizes of Laboratory Animals for Research as well as Techniques for Handling Large Experimental Animals in Accordance with International Standards
  • Prof. Kanokwan Jarukamjorn – Submission and Consideration Process of Animal Research Ethics as well as Applications and Operational Guidelines under the Animals for Scientific Purposes Act

The primary goals of this training were to:

  • Enhance knowledge and understanding of ethical principles and best practices for using animals in scientific research
  • Encourage participants to apply ethical and appropriate methods while working with laboratory animals
  • Encourage responsible use of animals in research, promoting transparency and alignment with academic standards
  • Improve understanding of relevant laws and regulations, including the Animals for Scientific Purposes Act, B.E. 2558
  • Promote ethical practices in animal research, ensuring credibility and academic integrity that align with international standards.
  • Support the sustainable growth of scientific knowledge and technology while respecting animal welfare.

This training reflects Khon Kaen University’s dedication to strengthening both academic excellence and ethical responsibility among researchers, with the goal of developing a research system that would serve as the foundation for a standardized and internationally recognized research environment.
