Khon Kaen, Thailand – Khon Kaen University (KKU) is actively promoting the utilization of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) protein insects to foster sustainable development and bolster the grassroots economy, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On Tuesday, September 25, 2025, the Vice President for Enterprise and Societal Sustainability, Professor Dr. Thidarut Boonmars, led a delegation from KKU, including Professor Dr. Yupa Hanboonsong, head of the project, and other relevant personnel. They convened a meeting at the Sila Municipality Office in Khon Kaen Province to discuss the progress of the “Utilization of Protein Insects (BSF) for Sustainable Development in accordance with Royal Initiatives” project.
Mr. Pairat Thaweewan, Mayor of Sila Municipality, along with executives and staff, welcomed the KKU team. The discussions focused on collaborative development to drive waste management and alternative protein production through BSF farming. This initiative aims to benefit local communities by addressing environmental issues, creating economic value, reducing animal feed costs for farmers, and enhancing self-reliance sustainably, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents.
The meeting sought to establish cooperation between Khon Kaen University and Sila Municipality. KKU will provide expertise on BSF, an insect capable of efficiently producing protein as an animal feed substitute, to be implemented in local communities. The discussions emphasized a comprehensive planning approach, covering aspects such as reducing farmers’ animal feed production costs, generating supplementary income for households, and managing organic waste. These efforts are designed to extend the circular economy concept under the “Issue-Based Integrated Community Development Model Project in accordance with Royal Initiatives.”
This project directly contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Khon Kaen University remains committed to fostering partnerships that not only address the needs of the grassroots economy but also lead to long-term societal sustainability.
