Over 90 university personnel and international students gather to develop intercultural communication skills and explore the pivotal role of academic institutions in medical diplomacy.
On 19 June 2026, the International Affairs Division of Khon Kaen University organised an international affairs staff development seminar at the Bayasita Hotel, Khon Kaen University. The event brought together more than 90 participants, including executives, international relations network coordinators from various departments, and students reading for the International Relations and Diplomacy programme at Khon Kaen University International College. The primary objectives of the seminar were to enhance knowledge, strengthen international affairs capabilities, and strategically prepare personnel to drive the University towards global internationalisation.
The seminar commenced with an opening address by Mr. Surapon Petchvra, Vice Chairman of the Khon Kaen University Council. Associate Professor Nawarat Wara-aswapati, D.D.S., D.M.Sc., Vice President for International Affairs, and Assistant Professor Acharawan Topark-Ngarm, Ph.D., Assistant to the President for International Affairs, officially welcomed the attendees. The executives emphasised that international collaboration serves as a cornerstone for contemporary university development. They highlighted that academic staff, administrative personnel, and students all play an indispensable role in elevating the capabilities and institutional profile of Khon Kaen University on the global stage.
During his opening remarks, Mr. Petchvra underscored the critical role of international relations personnel, describing them as the “frontline” of the University. He noted that their professionalism is essential in cultivating institutional credibility, creating positive first impressions, and fostering enduring partnerships with international networks.
The seminar featured a special keynote lecture titled “Roles of the University in Medical Diplomacy” delivered by Ambassador Jak Boon-Long, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Ambassador. Ambassador Boon-Long shared extensive diplomatic insights regarding the vital contributions universities make towards medical diplomacy, which remains a key dimension of contemporary international cooperation.
Ambassador Boon-Long elucidated that modern universities function beyond traditional boundaries of graduate production and knowledge creation. Rather, they serve as vital mechanisms linking international communities through education, research, and academic services. This is particularly evident in the fields of health sciences and medicine, where universities facilitate the global exchange of medical knowledge, technology, and innovations, ultimately advancing public health systems and societal well-being.
Furthermore, Ambassador Boon-Long highlighted the significance of constructing collaborative networks with overseas academic institutions, hospitals, international organisations, and government agencies. Such partnerships enable institutions to collectively address global health challenges, including emerging infectious diseases, public health preparedness, and medical workforce development, thereby strengthening international relations through the common language of health.
The seminar also featured a session on “Personality, Dress Code, and International Etiquette” conducted by Mrs. Kamonrat Boon-Long. She emphasised that appropriate personal deportment and professional etiquette are vital components of cross-cultural communication. These elements are key to establishing credibility, mutual respect, and professionalism in international affairs, whether welcoming foreign dignitaries, attending international conferences, or initiating collaborations with global partners.
This presentation covered comprehensive guidelines on appropriate conduct in formal and semi-formal settings, international dress codes for various occasions, communication etiquette, introductions, and cross-cultural interactions. It also addressed best practices that demonstrate respect for cultural diversity, which is a core skill for personnel operating within international environments.
In the afternoon, participants engaged in a practical workshop focused on international dining etiquette. This session provided hands-on experience in global table manners, the proper use of dining utensils during formal multi-course meals, and the appropriate protocols for attending official receptions and diplomatic functions.
This seminar reflects the ongoing commitment of Khon Kaen University to the comprehensive development of its international affairs personnel. By equipping staff with academic insights, intercultural communication skills, refined professionalism, and global etiquette, the University continues to elevate its international operations and fortify its readiness to cultivate sustainable global partnerships.
